CS Lewis wrote, 'We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.'

the problem is that the food and sex stuff is SO enjoyable and immediate that many of us figure that we'll wait for the 'infinite joy' stuff until a little later... especially when we see that many people who have abandoned the mud pies aren't a bundle of laughter either!

It's true... and I'm not sure I agree entirely with Lewis in this quote. But I do like the idea that we are 'easily pleased'. That made me stop and think. Too much mediocre telly. Too much mediocre conversation, even. Perhaps we can all help each other to search for the treasure, and to incorporate the sex and the food and the art and the life more joyfully within the bigger picture?
