on the up

'In a recent speech to his professional colleagues, Martin Seligman, past president of the American Psychological Association, reported that he had found over 40,000 studies on depression but ony 40 on the subject of joy, happiness or fulfillment.'*

I know exactly what hurts or depresses me; I don't know always what makes me feel alive. It's easy to pour energy into countering the downside; time, perhaps, to channel some of that into nurturing the up.

I can't think of a better use of time occassionally than to concentrate on what makes us feel good and alive and whole - it's incredibly therapeutic and can be extraordinarily hard at times to hang onto...

Maybe it's easier to see the missing brick in the wall, the hole and being depressed by that gap, than to imagine ourselves creatively and satisfyingly filling the hole by the skills and talents we have been given by a master who himself knew depression and despair on the night he was betrayed.
A timely posting, Brian, given the fuss today about the controversial statuesque portrayal of a great man who was dogged by depression all his life, Winston Churchill.
